If the wetness indicator has turned blue, indicating a wet nappy, you should generally change the nappy straight away. Check the nappy around feeding time and when baby wakes up. In the following cases, body waste are likely to irritate baby's skin and induce redness, so check baby's skin condition frequently, regardless of whether the wetness indicator has changed color.
Basically, if baby doesn't get a red bottom after wearing the nappy, it can be considered that the nappy is suitable for baby's skin. However, do not assume that baby's skin is strong and leave the nappy on for a longer period of time. Please make a habit of changing baby's nappy once baby pees.
When you change baby's nappy, if baby's bottom remains wet or wrinkly, it may be a sign that there is heat and moisture trapped inside the nappy. A baby's skin is half as thick as an adult, leaving it prone to skin irritation such as wrinkling, redness, and nappy rash, so check baby's skin carefully every time you do a nappy change.
From newborn to three months old, just gently dab baby's skin without rubbing. Rather than wiping large areas, if you use your fingertips to gently wipe a small area bit by bit, even stubborn poo that has stuck to baby's bottom will be removed.
Pee also contains skin irritants, so if you don't wipe it away or wipe off completely, baby's bottom may turn red. When you change baby's nappy, gently dab over the bottom and genital area.
In the case of poo, there should be no visible poo stains left on the wipes. For pee, check the portion of the nappy that is wet and concentrate on cleaning that area of the baby's bottom. If baby's bottom is still slightly soiled when you thought you had cleaned it properly, baby could end up with nappy rash. If baby's skin is red when you do a nappy change, make sure you wipe that area more carefully in future.
